How to save money while traveling

If you’re wondering how could you save money while traveling, you’ve come to the right place! There are actually multiple ways to do so, and in this article, we will show you our favorites.

Luckily, traveling isn’t as expensive as it was in the past, and with a bit of planning and budgeting, everyone can do it. Of course, after you saved all year for your vacation, you’d like to not spend everything at once. That’s why we decided to come up with a list of ways to save money while traveling.

One of our favorite ways to save money during a trip is to look for free activities to do, like going on a hike, going to the beach, or visiting free museums. Other ways to save money are traveling off-season, stay in a place with a kitchen and cook instead of going out to eat, and being flexible with your flights.

We will walk you through different ways to save while you travel and if you use even one of our tips you’ll see your savings last longer.

So, let’s see in detail some ways of saving money during your travels:

Don’t eat out too often

Eating in a restaurant can be pricey and if you eat out all the time your savings are going to run out really quickly. So, what is the solution?

One way to solve this issue could be to find an accommodation with a kitchen so you can cook your meals yourself.

Another way could be buying ready-to-eat food from local supermarkets. You could eat local food at a much affordable rate and still enjoy a great meal.

There are exceptions to this rule. If you travel to South Asia, for example, eating out could be really cheap so you won’t need to worry too much about it. But if you travel to Paris, you may want to be more careful with your spending.

Cut off your drinking too to save even more. Cocktails are not essential and you could save a lot of money if you don’t buy alcohol.

Travel off-season

If you’ve ever traveled before you may have heard the terms high season and low season. The high season is a time of the year when a lot of people travel, for example in the summer or around New Year. Low season, on the other hand, is a time of the year when there are fewer travelers.

As you can imagine, prices are higher during high season since the demand is higher. So, to save money it’s better to plan your travels during the low season.

You will save on flights, accommodation, tours, and souvenirs. Of course, high seasons are popular for a reason so maybe you’ll have to compromise on good weather and entertainment. But if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, low season is perfect for you.

hotel room

Who doesn’t love a good hotel room? But if your stay extends past a couple of days your savings are going to run out quickly. There’s no need to stay in a 4-star hotel when you could choose a B&B or even an apartment at a much lower cost.

You can save a lot by looking for alternative accommodation. Instead of staying in a hotel, book an Airbnb, an apartment, or a hostel.

The prices are much lower and you could find places equipped with a kitchen and/or a washing machine, allowing you to save even more. Cooking your own meals and washing your clothes are both great ways to save money while you travel.

Look for free activities to do

You don’t have to pay for everything when you travel. In fact many amazing activities are free and you should absolutely take advantage of them.

You could go for a hike, have a picnic in a park, visit free museums or archeological sites, go on a beach or go on a free tour. Research online some free activities you could do and make a plan so when you arrive at your destination you’ll already have a schedule.

Remember that you could also walk around from one place to another instead of taking a taxi or the bus. Walking is great for you and it allows you to save even more.

Reduce your shopping

Another great way to save money while you travel is to reduce your shopping. Souvenirs can cost you a lot and add up to your travel spending. Maybe you collect souvenirs from all your travels, or you buy them as gifts for your family, either way, they cost you a lot.

So, to save during your trips you could reduce your shopping. Cut down your souvenir shopping to just a couple of pieces for your closest family members if you absolutely must buy them.

Otherwise, just stop buying them and take pictures instead. They don’t cost you anything and you’ll still have memories of that travel.

Be flexible with your flights

When looking for flight prices online check out other dates to see if they are cheaper. Having flexible dates allow you to grab the best offers and save on tickets.

There are companies that offer discounts on certain days or certain months so if you’re able to pick your vacation days, search for the cheapest days to fly.

Choose flights that aren’t direct since those usually cost less. People prefer direct flights because they’re more convenient. But if you don’t mind changing multiple planes this can be a great way to save money.

Another trick we often use is to only bring a carry-on bag. You will not pay any fees for checked baggage and those are usually quite high. Of course, you will be able to pack much less but it can work if your trip is not too long.
