Traveling is such a fun and fulfilling activity. You get to see new places, discover new cultures, and taste new foods. It doesn’t need to be expensive either. There are plenty of free things to do when you travel!
In fact, traveling has become much cheaper over the years. Because of all the discounts that both hotels and airlines offer, you feel increasingly drawn to pack your bags and go.
The only thing that’s holding you back is the fear of having to spend a lot of money to really enjoy your stay. Sure, you can find a flight ticket that’s under $50 but what about all the money you need to spend on guided tours, meals, and shopping?
Well, the good news is that there are plenty of fun activities you can do that are free. There is no need to spend a fortune when you travel. You can be on a budget and still enjoy your stay.
We will list below our favorite free things you can do when you travel and hope you’ll find some inspiration for your next adventure!
Go on a walk
Going on a walk is maybe the first free thing to do when you travel that comes to mind. At least, it is usually the first thing we do when we arrive in a new city. It is free and it allows you to explore the city beyond what’s on the hotel guide.
You will also find several no upfront cost walking tours in a lot of cities. Freelance guides or students offer these tours where you pay whatever you think it’s fair. It is a cheaper way to visit the city with a guide, and often the guides do an amazing job since they rely on tips.
Go to the beach
If you travel to a coastal city, a visit to the beach is a great way to spend a couple of hours or even an entire day! Laying on the beach, enjoying the sea breeze and, if the weather allows, going for a swim are all free and relaxing activities.
You could also read that book that’s been waiting forever in your bookcase. And, if you love technology you could buy an e-reader and enjoy thousands of books on one device.
Be sure to find a public beach, because otherwise you’ll have to pay to be able to stay on an equipped beach.
Visit a museum or an archaeological site
Visiting a museum isn’t something you think of when you look for free things to do when you travel. But, in a lot of cities, there are lots of free museums. Furthermore, you can find opportunities to visit for free even the museums that usually have an entrance fee.
For example, most museums have free entrance for students, young adults under 26 years old, and people over 65 years old.
Or you can check out if they have a specific day when the entrance is free, like the Louvre in Paris or the Colosseum in Rome that is free on the first Sunday of every month.
Go on a hike
Hiking is another free activity you can do during your travels. And, we like it a lot because it allows you to explore places that aren’t very touristy. Also, you get to be close to nature, which is great.
Search on Google for some local hiking paths or ask the receptionist at your hotel for suggestions. Also, don’t forget to bring your stainless steel water bottle! You don’t want to run out of fresh water while on a hike.
Visit a church
Religious places are another amazing option if you want to explore the city for free. The architecture is truly incredible whether you’re visiting a church, a mosque, a synagogue or a cathedral.
Most cities in Europe have endless churches and you could spend days visiting them. So, get a map of the city and start exploring!
Explore a market
Finally, locate any local markets and go explore them. If you’re looking for some hidden treasures, that’s the place you want to go to! You will find local food, gorgeous fabrics, and beautiful handcrafted items.
Would you want some unique souvenirs for you or your friends? You are in luck! Local markets are full of charming and peculiar objects, so go explore some.
