When you go on vacation the last thing you want is to bring on excessive weight with you. So, unfortunately, all those amazing books that have been waiting in your library have to stay at home. Could you imagine having to run to catch your train with heavy luggage? To avoid extra weight an e-reader is a great alternative! So, we made a list to help you choose the best e-reader to bring on vacation with you.
An e-reader is a small tech device, usually with a 6-inch display, that allows you to have access to thousands of books in the palm of your hand. You could, theoretically, read e-books on your smartphone. But, unlike smartphones or tablets that can get distracting with all the apps they have, an e-reader’s only function is to allow you to read books.
A lot of the e-readers you can buy nowadays are also waterproof so you can stay safely by the pool or on a beach, without worrying about splashes on your device.
How do you choose an e-reader?
But how do you choose what e-reader to bring on vacation with you? There are several factors to consider before making your purchase and hopefully, we will help you with your decision.
E-readers use E Ink screens which display text almost like a paper book and are much easier on the eye compared to smartphones or computers. Older models were not backlit and you needed light to be able to see the text on the screen. Today, most of them have lighting, with different ranges of intensity that you can change according to the natural light.
The e-readers market is pretty much dominated by two competitors, Amazon Kindle and Kobo. They both have great products and a wide book selection from which you can choose and read. There isn’t only one e-book format so when you choose your e-reader keep in mind what formats they can read.
Both Kindle and Kobo use copy protection of their books, so you can’t read them on each other’s devices. Luckily, both brands allow you to browse their libraries online for free, so you can decide which one has the titles you like and want to read.
Finally, you should also consider if having a waterproof device is important to you. Do you like reading while taking a bath or by the pool? Then consider waterproof models and never worry again about splashes.
There is a wide selection of e-readers today and choosing which one to buy can get a bit overwhelming. We are here to help and show you the best e-readers to bring on vacation with you.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
Kindle Paperwhite is one of the best e-readers available on the market. It is available in Black, Twilight Blue, Plum, or Sage and has a 300 PPI glare-free display that allows you to read even in bright sunlight. You can choose between 8 GB or 32 GB storage if you need more space.
The screen has adjustable light that allows you to use it both indoors and outdoors, during the day or at night.
It is waterproof so you can read safely by the pool or in the bath. Paperwhite is IPX8 rated, which means that it is protected in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes. It is therefore a great e-reader to bring on vacation.
With a full charge it will last up to six weeks, depending on how often you use it. For a full charge it needs four hours.
You have access to million of titles and to Amazon’s Audible, allowing you to read or listen to your favorite books.
Amazon Kindle Oasis
Kindle Oasis is one of the most expensive and advanced e-readers. This 7-inch device has an asymmetrical body that features page-turn buttons which makes it easy to use with just one hand.
It has a 300 PPI flush-front Paperwhite display with an auto-brightness feature that changes the screen’s brightness depending on the light. The screen has a shade that goes from white to amber.
Kindle Oasis has been tested to withstand immersion in 2 meters of fresh water for 60 minutes, so if you like reading by the pool its waterproof technology keeps it safe.
It charges fully in three hours and lasts up to six weeks if you use it for half an hour per day. You will have access to millions of books from Amazon’s collection.
An alternative to the Kindle Oasis is Kobo Forma. With its wide 8-inch screen and an asymmetrical body, it offers a great reading experience. It is fully waterproof up to 60 minutes in up to 2 meters of water.
Just as the Oasis, it also has page-turn buttons to move through the story. You can read both in portrait and landscape mode, and you can choose to change orientation automatically when you turn the e-reader.
Kobo Forma is available both in 8 GB and 32 GB and has an adjustable color temperature. It is easy on the eyes and allows you to enjoy a good book before going to sleep.
Kobo Forma’s adjustable front-light is easy on your eyes. It gradually reduces the blue-light exposure that keeps you alert throughout the day, so you can read before bed, then get right to sleep.
Kobo Libra H2O
Kobo Libra H2O as its name indicates is also waterproof (up to 60 min in up to 2 mt of water). It has a 7-inch screen with a 300 ppi display, offering you a clear reading experience with its glare-free touchscreen.
Kobo Libra has an adjustable color temperature that reduces blue light as the day goes on. It is only available with an 8 GB storage, so it lacks the larger option available in Kobo Forma or Kindle Paperwhite.
It has page-turn buttons and allows both landscape and portrait reading. You can choose between black and white, but we would suggest black as it lasts longer.
Kobo Clara HD
Kobo Clara HD is a cheaper option but nonetheless a great one. It has a 6-inch touchscreen with a 300 ppi display. It has adjustable brightness that reduces blue light for your night reading sessions or increases brightness during the day.
